April News & Updates

April | Issue 9.0

Greetings, {{Constituent Last Name}}

I hope this email finds you well. Today is E-Day - don't forget to get out and vote if you haven't already! The party that forms government will be making significant policy choices that impact our everyday lives. They will make policy to address the growing housing and homelessness crisis, decide the future of the national child care plan, develop Canada's response to the US tariffs, and so much more that directly impacts each and every one of us. If you follow our socials, you'll know we're signatories of the Demand Better campaign, a national campaign aimed at highlighting the policies we want to see prioritized by the next government.

And, while so much is going on across the country, in our province, and even in our Region, there is also, as always, lots going on at YWCA Cambridge. Read on for this month's latest updates.

Sincerely,

Kim Decker, CEO

Early Bird Tickets to the Women of Distinction Awards Now On Sale

It's time for the Women of Distinction Awards!

This event always sells out and never fails to inspire. Come and celebrate this year's 24 nominees and the seven recipients who will join the more than 350 women and gender-diverse individuals who have been recognized by these awards since 1991.

Come celebrate and be inspired, all while helping YWCA Cambridge raise critical funds for our new women's emergency homeless shelter.

She Talks: Stories of Tenacity and Grit

She Talks on April 13 was, unsurprisingly, an incredible evening! We heard raw and inspiring stories from Ellyn Winters-Robinson, Leanna DaCunha, and Jessica Quackenbush, and our host (and our Director of Philanthropy!) Nataleigh Ballantyne also sat down for an intimate chat with style icon Lynn Spence.

She Talks is the kind of event we like to refer to as "friendraising." By the end of the night, everyone in the room felt connected and inspired - we know because attendees told us! Thank you to our speakers for sharing their stories, attendees for joining us, and to our incredible photographer Em Rowsell for capturing the magic of the night. Thank you also to our event partners 91.5 The Beat and 107.5 Dave Rocks.

Did you miss the night, but want a taste? Check out Em's gorgeous photos here!

Women's Shelter Updates

Celebrating the first Easter at the shelter

Our women's emergency homeless shelter is now full and we have a full staff complement.

The women staying with us are settling in and we've set up services with our partner agencies to provide mental and physical health services and other programming vital to supporting women as they move  out of homelessness.

As this is the first year of operations for our shelter, there are going to be a lot of firsts, the most recent one being celebrating Easter!

Our incredible Food Services Coordinator, Ola,  put on a full roast chicken dinner for staff and residents, and staff had the shelter all decked out to celebrate the holiday. We're grateful to our community for continuing to support our efforts to create pathways out of homelessness for women in Cambridge. We can't do it without you!

Child Care and Summer Camp Updates

Don't miss out on securing your summer camp spot!

Our summer camp staff have been busy preparing for the best summer camp season yet! Only a few spaces remain at our camp programming out of Wesley United, so don't wait to register your little camper! This camp will offer loads of experiences, both indoors, outdoors, and off site when we go on exciting field trips.

LINC re-School programming now open to the public for registration

The LINC Preschool Program is run in partnership with Conestoga College. Children of a parent attending the Conestoga College LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) Program in Cambridge are eligible to attend. Beginning in April 2025, this program, open to children ages 2.5-6 years old, will be open to the public.

Parents do not need to be newcomers or attending LINC programming in order to have their children attend this half-day preschool program. To apply for a space, visit the One List as you would a normal child care program.

The W: Women's and Youth Program Updates

A Special Message to Winter 2025 Small Steps to Success Graduates

We are excited to share that Small Steps to Success has successfully graduated 5 incredible women from our Winter 2025 session! This cohort has shown remarkable determination and growth throughout their journey.

The program celebrates two participants who have secured positions through their placement agencies, one individual who is pursuing further education by enrolling in the ConnectHER Electrical program at Conestoga College and another participant who has chosen to stay on and volunteer with their placement agency, giving back to the community.

These achievements highlight the hard work and dedication of our graduates, and we are thrilled to support them as they take their next steps. Please join us in congratulating all of them on their success!

Shoutout to The Mule Cambridge

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mule for their generosity in providing lunch for Small Steps to Success-Winter 2025 graduating class. The food was absolutely delicious and truly made the event even more special. Your support means so much to us, and we appreciate everything you do for our community.

Small Steps Grad-Led Programming

We recently had a bracelet making activity facilitated by a previous graduate of the Small Steps to Success program. The way she shared the properties of the gems was truly enlightening and added a special touch to the experience. The bracelets turned out beautifully, and I know everyone enjoyed the creative process.

SHYFT Program Projects

SHYFT program participants have been busy in schools creating special projects to engage their school communities. Recent projects have included two collages, one is of a 'Spread Kindness' Campaign from St. Michael's where the group made tear-away flyers so folks could take what they needed, whether that be a compliment or an affirmation.

SHYFT%20I%20am%20affirmation%20collage%20(1).jpeg

The other is a collaging project led by our Bachelor of Social Work student Emily who shared the book 'I am Enough' by Grace Byers and engaged participants in creating an art piece with the prompt "Like a ___, I'm here to ____". We are always inspired by the thoughts and ideas each youth generates within SHYFT groups, sharing their messages and creating change within their group and school communities!
